A hot oil treatment was one of the first things I did when I started my natural hair journey. My hair and scalp were extremely dry after years of neglect.
Hot oil treatments are extremely easy to do and you don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of expensive products. I love doing a hot oil treatment at least once a month; twice a month during the winter.
Here are my tips on doing a hot oil treatment on your natural hair:
Detangle your hair
Before washing my hair or applying any treatments, I make sure to gently detangle. Never detangle on dry hair! Lightly dampen your hair with a spray bottle and a tiny bit of leave in or regular condition and comb/brush through starting at your ends and up to your roots. My favorite detangling brush is the Felicia Leatherwood Detangler Brush.
Choose an oil that works for your hair
There are many different types of oil you can use for a hot oil treatment. If you have finer strands like myself, you may want to use a lighter oil like coconut, jojoba or almond. If you have coarser strands, Jamaican black castor oil or olive oil may work for you. I personally like to do a mix of oils: Mostly coconut, with some Jamaican black castor oil and Curly Proverbz Fenugreek Elixir mixed in.
Warm the oil
Warm the oil on the stove on very low heat by boiling a pot of water, removing it from heat, and placing a heat-safe bowl or cup of your oil in the boiling water. Let it warm for two to three minutes. Make sure to test the heat of the oil on your wrist before putting it on your head!
Apply the oil
Now is the fun part. Apply the oil to your hair, starting from roots to tip. Don’t forget to massage it into your scalp as well. Then apply a plastic cap and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. To maximize the effects, apply heat. I use the Conair Bonnet Hair Dryer on high.
Rinse
After conditioning with the oil for at least 30 minutes, rinse it out. I personally like to just use water to rinse the oil out but depending on the texture of your hair and the oil you used, you may want to you a little shampoo.
If you’re looking for an easy and cost effective way to add moisture and shine to your hair, try a hot oil treatment. Let me know in the comments what your favorite oils are!
