Buying natural hair products can a be a hit or miss. When I first went natural, I would be so excited to try a new gel only to find that it did not work at all on my hair and then I was out $20. I now have a better understanding of what my hair likes and doesn’t like, but I still like to try new products from time to time. This trial and error approach can be expensive which is why I’ve created a natural hair product swap group.
There’s a narrative on social media that natural hair “isn’t for everyone” and that the natural hair community is toxic. I really want to change that. Natural hair is for everyone and it doesn’t have to be super expensive and time consuming. It’s time to take the community and the movement back to its roots.
I had the idea to start a swap group because starting a natural hair journey can be overwhelming and cost prohibitive for a lot of people. Black women spend nine times more than other groups of women on hair care products, according to Nielsen. I’m definitely not the only natural who has unused or barely used products sitting under my sink.
Beyond saving money, the goal of this group is to connect naturals in a way that is positive and productive. We are constantly being fed messages that our natural hair is too difficult or not enough and that if we just buy this one product, all our problems will be solved. Instead, let’s share and uplift one another, while saving some coins in the process.
