Everyone’s favorite hot girl Megan Thee Stallion was noticeably absent from social media (good for her!) at the start of the year. But in March, she came back, hot as ever, only this time she was rocking her natural hair.
Since then, Meg has been consistently showing off her natural hair on Instagram, red carpet events, and during shows. The Houston rapper has shown off her natural hair in the past, but has mostly worn long, colorful wigs and weaves, as least publicly. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love all of Meg’s hairstyles and the versatility of wigs is what makes them a great option for those who want to switch up their style often and experiment with color without damaging their natural hair.
While more and more Black women are embracing their natural hair, in the realm of hip-hop, long-standing stereotypes have often dictated narrow beauty standards for the women in it. Male rappers regularly have lyrics coveting women with light skin and “good hair” in their songs, while simultaneously degrading Black women with darker complexions and kinky hair.
The world of female rappers has long been marked by iconic and ever-evolving hairstyles, serving as a visual expression of their artistry and persona. But, that hair is rarely natural. To see Meg rocking her natural hair, not just in her personal life but as part as her public persona, is significant in an industry where you rarely see even a model in a rap video with type four hair.
Megan’s wearing her natural hair disrupts the prevailing beauty standards in the music industry. It challenges the notion that only a specific type of hair is desirable or marketable, opening doors for a more inclusive definition of beauty within hip hop.
Meg, despite all her success, has dealt with extreme levels of disrespect and literal violence from the rap industry. Her male peers made jokes about her being shot by thankfully currently-incarcerated bridge troll Tory Lanez and even said she made it all up. Seeing Meg wearing her big, beautiful hair after closing that dark chapter feels like the start of a new era for her, which I’m so excited for.
I love seeing Megan on her healing journey and I hope her career, like her hair, continues to flourish.
