When I first started wearing my hair natural, I was a product junkie. On my journey to figure out what worked for my dense, fine strands, I would buy almost every product an influencer recommended or that I got a targeted ad for. What I ended up with was a closet full of barely used products that didn’t work for my hair. Eventually, I realized that the best natural hair products weren’t the ones with gimmicks.
In my experience, the best natural hair products have simple ingredients. Now that I know what works for my hair, I don’t waste time or money with every new product that drops. I have a set group of products in my rotation that I go back to every wash day.
Here are the best natural hair products that I use every single drop of:
- Kinky Curly Knot Today and Curling Custard. This duo is my wash day staple. I love the clean ingredients and my hair drinks up marshmallow root, which is featured in both products. Knot Today acts as both a detangler and a leave in conditioner and leaves my hair soft and manageable all week. The Curling Custard gives me defined, soft curls without crunch or flakes.
- The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam. I recently started incorporating mousse to my twistouts and love the results. This mousse gives me extra hold to my curls without adding stiffness and crunch.
- Olaplex. I am an Olaplex stan. Despite the lawsuit, Olaplex Nos. 0, 3, and 7 have helped me keep my hair healthy and avoid heat damage, despite getting frequent silk presses. I use Nos. 0 and 3 to prep my hair, and use No. 7 as a heat protectant, which leaves my hair super shiny.
- African Pride Aloe & Coconut Oil Pre-Poo. Pre-pooing has revolutionized my wash day. I know that sounds dramatic but it’s true. I use this to detangle my hair prior to washing it and it not only easily melts through tangles without breakage, it moisturizes my hair so it doesn’t get too stripped my conditioner. And, it’s only $5! Run, don’t walk to get this if you want easier wash days.
- Curly Proverbz Henna & Aloe Masque, Amla & Bhringraj Masque, Fenugreek Elixir, and The Golden One. I had been following Curly Proverbz for years and was so excited to see her start her own brand. I credit henna for repairing my severely damaged hair when I first went natural. If you’re curious about Ayurvedic hair care and don’t want to jump want to jump straight into a full blown henna mask, Curly Proverbz’s Henna & Aloe Masque is both strengthening and moisturizing. The amla mask is also great for adding springiness to curls. The Fenugreek Elixir has amazing ingredients that help with thickening hair and slowing hair fall and I also use it for hot oil treatments. I use the Golden One oil to seal my hair to keep it moisturized all week long.
Remember, you don’t need every product under the sun. Focus on figuring out what ingredients work for you hair, not following trends!
