I knew I wanted to wear my natural hair for both my weddings last summer. But considering one wedding was in June in the Caribbean and the other was in the dead of August, I knew achieving a style that would last the humidity would be a challenge. After a little research, I realized that natural hair extensions would be the best option for both events.
Using natural hair extensions to get a silk press that lasts
I’ve tried natural hair extensions in the past, but found the texture didn’t match my hair and the quality wasn’t great. Luckily, some new brands have popped up over the past couple years so I had more options. I was so excited when I found Heat Free Hair because they have so many options in different textures and curl patterns, ranging from 3B to 4C.
While I wanted to wear my hair curly for my wedding in Antigua, I had to be realistic. My hair is very curly and I was getting married on the beach. I knew a curly style would frizz and shrink pretty quickly so I decided that getting a weave with minimal leave out would be the best option. I wanted the weave to look natural and just like my own hair so I bought the “Blow Out” wefted hair. The hair matched mine perfectly when straightened. Even though it sounds like a huge risk, I was able to make my silk press last all day without any frizz by using the right products.
Drawstring curly ponies make glamorous looks easy
For my wedding in August in New Jersey, I wanted to give my hair a break from direct heat. I wanted to show off my curls while also doing a style that would hold up through several outfit changes and dancing. I opted for the “For Kurls” 24 inch Drawstring Pony. The “For Kurls” texture is good for those with 3C to 4A curls. Now, I don’t really subscribe to the hair typing chart but in this case, it was helpful to get an idea of what the texture would look like against my hair. It was a perfect match. I felt very Princess Jasmine with my bubble pony, adorned with pearls, done by my stylist Shay Gomez.
I’m so happy I decided to embrace my natural hair for my weddings. For so long, many of us were told that you must wear your hair straight for special events. For me, that led to years of damage due to relaxer, heat, and weaves. Once I finally decided to embrace my true self, my hair flourished. Natural hair is perfect for special occasions and now that their are many great options for natural hair extensions, the possibilities are endless.
