Summer is here which means it’s braid season. I love having knotless braids in the summer; being able to jump in the pool or ocean without worrying about my natural hair is undefeated.

But before you head to the salon or start braiding at home, proper prep is essential for long-lasting results that keep your natural hair protected and healthy. Here’s how to get your hair ready for box braids:
Cleanse and clarify
Before installing braids, start with a clean slate. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup and oil.
My favorite clarifying shampoo is Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight Love At First Wash Water to Foam Shampoo, which is only $11.38 on Amazon.

Deep condition and treat
You want your hair to be hydrated and nourished before tucking them away into braids for a month or more. This is especially important if you have dry hair.
My go to deep conditioners are SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Hair Masque and Mielle Organics Babassu & Mint Deep Conditioner with protein.
I also like to do a treatment like Olaplex No. 3 or K18 Leave-In Molecular Hair Mask before getting my braids done.
Detangle and stretch
Thoroughly detangle your hair before braiding. Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush and work from the ends to the roots to avoid breakage. Detangling will make the braiding process smoother and prevent unnecessary stress on your hair.
Stretching your hair before braiding can help prevent breakage and make it easier to manage. I like to blow dry my hair on a cool to warm setting. Make sure to use heat protectant! My favorite’s are CHI Keratin Silk Infusion and Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil.
This is also a good time to get a light trim so you’re not braiding your hair with split or scraggly ends.
Treat your scalp
A healthy scalp is key to healthy hair. Simply massage a natural oil into your scalp or use a specialized scalp treatment product, like the SheaMoisture Aloe Butter Scalp Moisture Cream. I like to use my homemade hair growth oil or the Mielle Rosemary Mint Oil.
Moisturize
Before braiding, apply a leave-in conditioner to seal in moisture and protect your hair from damage. This will help keep your hair hydrated and prevent it from becoming dry and brittle under the braids. I like to use the As I Am Double Rich Daily Moisturizer, which has a thick, buttery consistency that keeps my hair moisturized for a long time.
By following these simple steps, you’re ensuring that your natural hair stays healthy in your protective style. Now, go enjoy those braids and the sun!
