I’ve broken away from that mindset that my hair must be straightened for events like weddings. That being said, I’m not going to pretend that curly hair is always simple to style — especially in very hot, humid weather. For a recent wedding during a heatwave, I wanted a style that would last and one that would also use minimal heat. Enter a flexi rod set.
A flexi rod set is a heatless hair styling technique used to create curls or waves, particularly on natural hair. It involves wrapping sections of hair around flexible rods, allowing them to dry, and then unraveling them to reveal defined curls.
To achieve this style, my stylist — Shay at The Coily Collective — started off on my freshly washed hair, applied K18 Leave-In Molecular Hair Mask (my favorite), Redken Heat Protectant Cream, then blew out my hair.
Shay then sectioned my hair, applied mousse to each section (I’m not sure which she used but I like The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam), and then wrapped each section with flexi rods. You can get a 42 piece set of flexi rods on Amazon for $13.50.
After all the flexi rods were applied, I sat under the dryer for about 40 minutes. Once my hair was completely dry, Shay carefully unraveled all the rods, revealing a head of springy curls. After separating the curls, she styled it into a sultry up-do.
To ensure the style lasted all night, we sprayed the finished style with Amika Head Strong Intense Hold Hair Spray and my holy grail, Oribe Anti-Humidity Finishing Spray. To prove that this style lasted through the 100 degree weather, here’s a picture of me at the end of the night:
I’ll definitely be trying flexi rod sets on my own. I love the defined, long lasting curls you can achieve with no or little heat.
