I’ve been admittedly MIA for the past few months. I have a good excuse, I promise: My husband and I are expecting a baby this summer! I’ve been in hibernation mode and focused on nurturing my mind, body, spirit — and hair! — during this special time. Pregnancy has actually allowed me to simplify my hair routine; I use less products and my wash days are much quicker.
With pregnancy comes so many changes and considerations of the products you use on your hair and body. Even before pregnancy, I opted for clean natural hair products that are paraben and sulfate free. Because of this, I really haven’t changed up my routine too much. When you’re pregnant, it’s important to avoid products that contain things like formaldehyde (found in hair straightening treatments like relaxers and some keratin treatments), oxybenzone (found in hairspray), and phthalates (which are in things with added fragrance).
It’s almost impossible to avoid these chemicals completely and it is easy to drive yourself crazy during pregnancy trying to make sure you’re only putting the best things in your body. If you’re unsure about a product, talk to your doctor and avoid going down a Google rabbit hole.
While I have pregnancy hormones to mostly thank for my thriving hair, these are the products I’ve been using:
Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Conditioner
I don’t usually stray from my usual conditioners but I decided to pick this up at Sephora on a whim and it has since become my go-to on wash days. The shampoo and conditioner leave my hair moisturized for days, even without using the mask that goes along with it (which I just bought and will be using next wash day). This conditioner and the entire Hydro Rush line is free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and mineral oils. It also has a very mild scent, which I really appreciate because during pregnancy, your sense of smell is extremely heightened and things that are too highly scented make me sick!

Curly Proverbz Henna and Aloe Masque
If you’ve read my blog before, you know this is one of my holy grail products. This mask provides the perfect balance of strength and moisture to my hair. Pure henna is safe to use during pregnancy and is also a good option for those who want to dye their hair naturally. I like to mix this mask with coconut oil and leave it on for two to three hours to reap all the benefits.
Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil
This has been one of my favorite silk press products for years but I have come to love it even more during pregnancy. My hair has been thicker and shinier thanks to my growing baby, and this oil takes it up a notch. I’ve been blow drying and straightening my hair at home more to save time during the week and oil is also a heat protectant. My curls bounce back every time.

When you’re pregnant, there’s going to be so much advice out there on what you should or shouldn’t do. It can be extremely overwhelming (and annoying). Do your best to use clean products but don’t be too hard on yourself if not everything you use is 100% organic and natural. Enjoy this time; it’s when your hair is at its best with little effort!
