Box braids are one of my favorite protective styles to do. I’ve written a lot about braids, how to care for them, and recommendations for the best hair to use for long-lasting braids. However, a recent study by Consumer Reports revealed a concerning truth: Box braids may not be as “protective” as we thought, as many popular brands of synthetic braiding hair have been found to contain dangerous and cancer causing chemicals.
Consumer Reports tested 10 popular brands of synthetic braiding hair and found that 100% of the samples contained carcinogens, chemicals that may cause cancer. The tests looked for both heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Benzene, a known carcinogen, was detected in three products. All samples also contained methylene chloride, a probable carcinogen. Lead, which can cause significant health issues, was found in nine out of ten products.
VOCs are released when the hair is heated, such as during the common practice of dipping the ends in boiling water to seal them. These VOCs can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, and lungs. Extended exposure to lead can lead to brain and nervous system damage, immune system suppression, reproductive issues, and kidney damage.

The materials used to make synthetic extensions are mainly plastics like acrylic fiber, nylon, or kanekalon. These materials undergo chemical processes, including polymerization, and may contain harmful chemicals like polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These chemicals have been linked to skin irritation, respiratory problems, and even cancer.
Although this is definitely alarming, cosmetic chemist Javon Ford pointed out that the study based the safe or allowable limits of these chemicals on oral exposure, not dermal exposure.
While the risk is unclear, it’s enough for me to avoid using synthetic braiding hair at all from this moment forward. I actually have been doing braids with human hair for some time; this study just reinforces for me that the additional cost is worth it.
Here are some of the human braiding hair brands to try instead of synthetic hair:
Starlet Virgin Human
I used this hair several times. The texture is soft and I was able to get a cool Zoe Kravitz look using this hair.

Y Wigs
Y wigs has a really extensive collection of human hair for all different types of braids. I really love the quality of this hair and that it comes in different colors. I used this hair for goddess braids and loved the result. You can use my code ASHLEYEDWARDS to get 15% off your order.

Remember, even if the hair is human, it is probably coated in something so it’s best to do soak the hair in apple cider vinegar and warm water before having it installed.
